False claims persist about COVID-19 vaccine-linked “turbo cancers”

Misinformation

Various popular vaccine opponents, including several health professionals, continue to promote the fake claim that COVID-19 vaccines cause so-called “turbo cancers.” These posts claim that doctors are seeing an increase in aggressive and end-stage cancers in young adults. A recent Belgian study in mice has also been circulated as evidence of the phenomenon.

This misinformation is widespread and resurfaces frequently. Debunking talking points may explain that turbo cancer is a term coined by vaccine opponents and is not recognized as a real phenomenon by cancer or immunology experts. Messaging may also emphasize that there is no evidence of an increase in aggressive or non-aggressive cancer diagnoses after COVID-19 vaccination. The renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center dismissed the claim that COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer as a complete myth.
