Extreme cold fuels online conversations about safety and climate change

Low Impact

As many U.S. states experience extreme cold and snow, some social media users are discussing severe weather events and their health effects. While many users are sharing tips to stay safe and support vulnerable community members, others are promoting conspiracy theories and dismissing weather reports as climate change fearmongering.

Recommendation

Extreme cold weather events provide an opportunity for health communicators to share resources on preparing for and staying safe in cold weather. Sharing information from trusted sources such as the National Weather Service, Ready.gov, and local weather alert services is recommended.
