Anti-vax organizations continue to use VAERS reports as evidence of the harmful effects of vaccination. An organization previously shown to espouse vaccine misinformation is spreading the claim that vaccine injury reports for adolescents have tripled in the weeks since the Pfizer vaccine became available to anyone over 12. The claim and others like it ignore the fact that VAERS reports are not verified and the system is not designed to determine if reported health problems were actually caused by vaccines. The spread of misleading and alarmist reporting is expected to escalate in the coming weeks as Moderna seeks emergency use authorization for its vaccine in children ages 12 and up.

Organizations and health communicators should pre-empt the inevitable increase in misinformation regarding vaccine safety for teens and children, in addition to understandable and justified information seeking by parents. Informational and educational materials should be made easily available and tailored for all relevant populations explaining in clear language the benefits, safety, and efficacy of these vaccines for youth, in addition to explanations of the safety trials these vaccines must pass in order to be authorized.
